Soldiers rehearse in fog ahead of reburial ceremony after bodies of British First World War soldiers are discovered in France.

These eerie scenes show soldiers rehearsing in the fog for a reburial ceremony after the bodies of 20 British First World War soldiers were found. The only man of those discovered to have been identified by name is Private William McAleer, from the 7th Battalion the Royal Scottish Fusiliers. His relatives will be represented at the service tomorrow in Loos-en-Gohelle, France, by his step-great-nephew - almost 100 years after he died. The 20 bodies were found at a construction site of a new prison being built in October 2010, where the Battle of Loos took place in September 1915. Soldiers of The 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland are rehearsing in Loos, with 19 unidentified men set to be buried as ‘Known Unto God’. Read more HERE

French Special Forces troops stage Niger raid

NIAMEY (AFP) - French special forces and local troops raided an army base Friday in northern Niger, ending a hostage seizure by Islamist fighters who had staged twin suicide bombings that killed at least 20 people. The dawn raid came after Signatories in Blood, a jihadist group that claimed Thursday's blasts, threatened to continue attacking Niger until the country withdraws its forces from neighbouring Mali, where they are part of a French-led military campaign against Al-Qaeda-linked Islamists. A French defence ministry official said two "terrorists" had been killed in the raid on a building at the Agadez army base, where Islamist fighters had holed up after the bombings and were holding a group of trainee soldiers hostage. An elected official in Agadez, the main city in Niger's mostly desert north, gave a higher toll, saying three "terrorists" and three hostages had been killed, as well as a civilian caught in the cross-fire. Niger's government did not confirm those numbers, while the French official said the toll was preliminary. Nigerien authorities would not say how many hostages had been taken. French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian confirmed France had taken part in the raid. "The situation has stabilised as we speak, especially in Agadez, where our special forces intervened to back the Niger forces," he said on France's BFMTV. Read More HERE

India, France conclude RS 30,000 cr deal on air defence system

New Delhi: India and France on Thursday concluded negotiations on a deal expected to be worth around Rs 30,000 crore for co-developing a short-range air defence system even as French President Francois Hollande made a fresh push for the sale of Rafale fighter jets to India."Both sides noted the ongoing progress of negotiations on the Medium-Multirole Combat Aircraft (M-MRCA) programme and look forward to their conclusion... steps are being taken for finalisation of the Short-range Surface to Air Missile(SR-SAM) project," India and France said in a joint statement. UK special forces active in Mali

Small team is providing non-combat support during French military action against jihadi groups in country, says source A small number of UK special forces soldiers are already on the ground in Mali helping to co-ordinate and advise the French military effort against the jihadi groups in the north.They are part of a team of British military and MI6 personnel in the country who are providing support to French commanders. None of the special forces soldiers are being deployed in a combat role, sources insisted.The UK is also preparing to answer a call from the French for extra help with reconnaissance aircraft, which is expected to include RAF Sentinels, which were used during the Libya campaign.
