The British Army's new state-of-the-art armoured fighting vehicle has brought new life to a former mining area of Wales.

General Dynamics has now opened its new factory in Merthyr Tydfyll - the place where the AJAX will be put together.

The factory will create 250 new jobs for the area, which was thrown into economic turmoil after the closure of coal mines.

·                                 I have just watched the film 71 about a young British soldier that gets left behind by his comrades after a botched patrol in Belfast. I read a few bad comments about the film on a Northern Ireland veteran’s web site on Facebook, from veterans who served there. Having served in Northern Ireland and Belfast myself I was keen to watch it. This is not a Hollywood Blockbuster type movie with money to burn on special effects and big name movie stars and in my opinion it was all the better for it. They only had one old Bedford Army truck and land rover and an APC, all used in the 70s. From what I saw of the uniform they were wearing it looked ok for the time. They used the same rifles I used over there the 7.62mm SLR, the only difference I noticed was that the rifle slings were kept on the rifle and not attached to the wrist as we used them in the 80s. When a soldier in the film was knocked unconscious by the mob, its was easily stolen by a young kid. Filming began on location in Blackburn, Lancashire in April 2013 and continued in Sheffield and Liverpool and for me this didn't spoil the effects, I mean they couldn't really make the movie on the streets of Belfast could they? I think the producers captured that feeling of impending violence and the sectarian friction between the communities. I sure if I had served in the early 70s I would be picking the film to pieces, but I didn't and on the whole I enjoyed the film and was never bored at any time, I was desperate to see what happened to the young soldier who Jack O’Connell played very well. Overall eight out of ten.

A Fijian British soldier to be deported.

A Fijian soldier who fought for Britain in Afghanistan issued a desperate plea to David Cameron yesterday to halt what he said was an unfair plan to send him back to Fiji this weekend.
Filimone Lacanivalu, detained in an immigration centre for the past month, said that he felt betrayed because of the way he had been treated, despite risking his life during nine years of service in the British Army.
“It is confusing, sad and depressing,” the former private, 34, told The Times, speaking by phone from Harmondsworth immigration removal centre near Heathrow.

Its strange how Britain opens its doors to any Tom Dick Or Ahmed. some of whom have no links with the UK and even bare us all ill will, but we deport a good man who was willing to lay down his life for the UK.

British Army musicians entertain unsuspecting shoppers in Cardiff with a flashmob performance of the Colonel Bogey march at The Capitol Shopping Centre.

Fifty professional bandsmen from The Band of The Prince of Wales's Division (regular soldiers) and The Band of The Royal Welsh (reservists) performed the famous march, by Kenneth Alford, in the sunshine before dispersing.

TWO BRITISH SOLDIERS DIE ON EXCERCISE IN HEATWAVE

Two military personnel, thought to be men from the army, are believed to have died from heat exhaustion while training in Wales.Two soldiers have died during a training exercise on the Brecon Beacons in Wales, the Ministry of Defence has said.

The pair were among three army personnel who are thought to have become ill after being affected by heat exhaustion on Saturday.

A statement released by the MoD said: "The MoD can confirm that it is working with Dyfed Powys Police to investigate an incident during a training exercise on the Brecon Beacons on Saturday in which two members of military personnel died.

"The two servicemen's next of kin have been informed. More information will be released in due course but it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage."

Temperatures in the Brecons are normally cooled by the 600m (2,000ft) and higher elevations that military personnel train at but on Saturday, heat in the surrounding area reached 30C (86F).

Sky News' Defence Correspondent Alistair Bunkell said sources had told him that the two men had been 'affected by conditions', with heat exhaustion thought to be involved.

All those affected were male, he said, and all were in the army. He said the MoD is releasing no details about what sort of training they were on.Read More HERE R.I.P.

When Cameron heard some negative comments from Army generals he was heard saying "They bloody well need to get used to defence cuts, how on earth am I supposed to get an Indian astronaut onto Mars if I have to keep wasting money on the British army?"

The MOD has signed a £15m contract to replenish the Army’s stock of supersonic Hellfire missiles used by Apache helicopters.Each Apache can carry up to 16 Hellfires which are mounted in sets of four beneath the helicopters stub-wing pylons. Each missile has its own guidance computer, steering control and propulsion system which helps to ensure precision targeting.The air-to-ground missile can accelerate at up to 425 meters per second – which means it takes fewer than 20 seconds to reach a target at its maximum range of five miles.  (Credit) British Army

I personally believe that women should be allowed to fight in War zones, we have to move with the times, its not WW2 with the Ladies waiting at home for the boys, its 2013 and we are all in this together male and female.As with men some women will be better suited to combat than others. I'm surprised at Major Judith Webb said she believed "women were not up to the physical challenge".If this was a male saying this he would be slated for being sexist.One consequence of women fighting with the men is when they are KIA, this could have a more severe psychological consequence for those that witness the death or injury.We already have women fighter pilots, this is just the next stage in my opinion , but what do I know? would I want my daughter captured or killed by the Taliban? No , but then neither would I want the same of my son.
