What a way to treat a heroine: Royal Navy girl who fought in Afghanistan told to cover up uniform on Virgin flight in case it offended other passengers. For 15 years she has proudly served her country as a Royal Navy engineer, risking her life in Afghanistan when she fought against the Taliban.
But far from showing Nicky Howse the respect she deserved as she flew back to her latest posting, Virgin Atlantic staff chose to humiliate her – by demanding that she remove her uniform because it was ‘offensive’.
They warned the 32-year-old helicopter technician she would not be allowed to fly unless she took off her combat fatigues and wore a sleep suit instead.Petty Officer Howse is on a three-month deployment with a helicopter unit in the US, but had been home on compassionate leave to attend her grandfather’s funeral. She had worn her uniform without any problems on a Virgin flight from America to Britain the week before.
The incident happened as she waited for her return flight to Los Angeles from Heathrow on Monday.Read More

This is an absolute disgrace and makes my blood boil, not a good advert for Virgin Atlantic,G4S is a joke, I doubt they would have stopped her travelling if she was wearing a Burkha and not showing her face? British companies can learn a lot from America whos firms really do have respect for their servicemen & women. Virgin should offer Nicky Howse a free holiday in the Caribbean , but I doubt if she would ever want to fly with them again and who can blame her.Their colour may be red but they have shown their true colours, they can learn a lot from how the Americans treat their military with true respect. If a Virgin flight was high-jacked would Richard Branson ask the SAS to wear a sleep suit so nobody gets offended?
