Rogue Gunner grew up in Cumbria, an area of rugged landscapes and white-flecked seas not unlike the Falklands in appearance. I was born on the 11th July 1962, at Risedale maternity hospital in Barrow in Furness, and was brought up on a council estate in the nearby town of Dalton. My parents were both Irish Catholics from Dublin – my mother was a deeply religious woman, with a rosary never far from her hand, and my father a hard worker who liked a pint of Guinness or three in the evenings. There was never much money around, and times were tough, though they would get tougher for everyone as the shipbuilding and iron industries began their decline after the high water mark of the middle of the century.
(RG) Above is the only photograph of me as a child. Unlike now in the 1960s not many people other than David Bailey had a camera. All I can say about reaching 46 today is amazingly I have made it this far. I suppose I should have a pint of Guinness!
