British and Afghan forces repulsed an attempt by hundreds of Taleban fighters to attack the provincial capital of Helmand, Lashkar Gah, on Saturday night in the most audacious Taliban attack in the province since 2006.
Up to 100 Taleban fighters were killed in a series of airstrikes and firefights around the city outskirts in fighting that began in the early evening as Taleban fighters were concentrating to attack the city of three sides and continued into the early hours of Sunday morning. Read It Here
(RG) This is going to be a long long War even making the troubles in Northern Ireland relatively short lived. If we have any chance of a peaceful solution and we have the political will to fight on both sides of the Atlantic, lets face it, it really doesn’t matter what NATO think as they are an impotent irrelevance militarily. We need a similar solution to the problems we faced in Iraq, that only a few years ago seemed insurmountable and a military/ peacekeeping/political solution. I’m sure that many more lives will be lost in the process, but like Iraq if we had cut and run like the Democrats had wanted and many left wingers in the UK, those brave servicemen’s lives would have been lost for nothing. It may seem unthinkable to some now but we may even have to have a power sharing deal with the Taliban similar to how Sein Fein/IRA share power with the Loyalists. Some will baulk at this idea but if we cannot defeat the Taliban militarily (which I do not rule out altogether) we may have little choice. Whatever happens I am 100% behind our boys.
