Photos From The Falklands War

Falkland Islands

(RG) A great selection of photographs from the War, I only wish I have had a camera with me. At the end you will notice a ferry MV Norland this was the ship that brought us from the Islands to Ascension and home.

We were told the news we were all waiting for. We would be sailing on the Norland to Ascension, then make the last stage of the journey by RAF transport.

We eagerly cleaned all the Batteries equipment and vehicles in preparation for loading. The rumour after the war was some Senior ranks and Officers had smuggled their illegal weapons back to the UK behind the panels of Rapier Missile Launchers. We had to hide ours in our personal kit. I worked out it was probably around 20th August when we boarded the Norland. I remember thinking, thank fuck, lets get back to normal civilisation. It wasn’t a case of standing on deck and sadly watching the Falkland Islands disappear, more a case of, let’s get to the bar and get shit faced. We were lucky we were allowed back on a ship after one of our Sergeants got drunk, found his way to the bridge of another ferry, and aimed his SMG at the Captain demanding he take him home. The Captain, it was claimed, said,
‘Get these animals off my ship now.’

It probably cost GBH a crate of whiskey and a box of cigars to defuse the situation. This was the same Sergeant who had fired a machine gun at an Argentine pilot after he had ejected from his stricken aircraft. The telltale signs of stress were already there, but everybody was too blind to see them. I was drunk from the moment I embarked on the Norland until I staggered down the steps of the aircraft at RAF Waddington in the UK.
