PTSD: Not A New Ailment On 'Wartorn' Battlefield

Combat and post-traumatic stress disorders in military veterans are not new, though the conditions have been called many other names throughout the years: "insanity" and "melancholia" during the Civil War, "shell-shock" during World War I and "combat fatigue" during World War II.

Top military leaders are now addressing the lingering effects of post-traumatic stress disorder, (PTSD) which were ignored for many years because they were seen as a sign of weakness. Last week, Gen. George Casey, the chief of staff of the U.S. Army, called PTSD "the defining military health issue of our era."

Consider that statement alongside the much-recounted story from World War II, when Gen. George S. Patton infamously slapped a solider suffering from "nervous exhaustion" in a military hospital and ordered him back to the front.

That story, and others from wars stretching from the Civil War to the current battles in Afghanistan and Iraq are chronicled in a new HBO documentary, Wartorn 1861-2010, which combines footage, interviews and documents to examine the effects of PTSD on soldiers returning from the battlefield. Falkland Islands Will Be Argentine Territory In 20 Years, Says Foreign Secretary Hector Timerman

The Falkland Islands will be Argentine sovereign territory within 20 years, according to the country’s foreign minister.Speaking during a visit to London, Hector Timerman, who last week refused a meeting with his British counterpart William Hague over the propsed inclusion of the Port Stanley government in discussions over the islands, insisted that Buenos Aires had no intention of finding a military solution to the dispute.Read More HERE

Mr Titerman sorry Timerman is an extremely deluded man and needs to seek medical help very soon, the day the Falkland Islands become Argentinian I will become a GAY Liverpool FC fan.

The names of the Wars change PTSD remains the same

THE Sun can today reveal that the mental health scandal afflicting traumatised troops has led to a surge in the number of military heroes being sent to jail. Having been denied help when they needed it most, more and more servicemen and women are turning to drink and drugs.
As many as 20,000 are in prison, on probation or parole, costing taxpayers £250million a year. The shameful toll was revealed as The Sun's StresS.O.S. campaign gathered momentum. We demand that all troops returning from Afghanistan have an appointment with an independent psychiatrist, that payouts for mental health issues are in line with those for physical injuries and that an all-party body is set up to organise a unified method of treatment.
The MoD said yesterday that 3.5 per cent of the prison population is ex-Forces. Charities say this soars when you include those on probation, parole or community service.
Around 4,000 troops have been diagnosed with a mental disorder.
