Paying our debt back in full.
This week this country is finally going to pay back the money we borrowed in the fight against Nazi Germany
War Debts Many may be suprised that our Allies charged us interest on the money we borrowed from them. Cash may have moved between countries but now in 2006 the blood of our young men & woman is flowing in the deserts of Iraq and Afghanistan. How much is their courage worth?

Had their been a referendum on this issue in America, I would have voted to knock some off of this debt just because I appreciate having the British as allies. But I must say I am surprised at your attitude. What does the debt have to do with today's coalition? Are we not all fighting the war against Islamic terrorism together? Are we not allies? Aren't you fighting *with* us, not *for* us?
ReplyDeleteI thought we were all fighting the War against Nazi Germany *Together* I do not concider I have an `ATTITIDE` I am simply reporting upon a news item. Great Britain is a hot bed of Islamic Terrorism can you please invade us next and hang our dictator?
ReplyDeleteHey Maggie,
ReplyDeleteYou are such a gracious lady you would have voted to knock some of the debt off wow! Was the free world not fighting against the Nazis, like todays GWOT? Im sure you would have been insulted if the Brits sent you a bill for help after the Twin Towers?
We were supporting you materially long before we entered into WWII and a great deal of the loans we are discussing here had to do with post war reconstruction. This money being paid back is not for a *bill* for our services fighting alongside your country against the Nazis. I think you know that. I don't get your sour grapes. I also don't notice anyone beefing about paying back the Canadians. Your country asked for a loan and we agreed and now a minority is carping about it. Why would you have sent us a bill for the Twin Towers as you call it? Although if we had asked for a loan and you expected it to be repaid, I would not have been insulted.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't trying to come off as gracious as your anonymous commenter snidely wrote. I was trying to express the fact that I *do* appreciate GB as an ally. While you joke about it, there is a problem in GB with Islamic extremism and I do worry about it.
My comment here was not meant to offend, I just don't see tying the post WWII reconstruction loans to events today.
By the way, the BBC had a very interesting article on this subject.
