Frigates could see a new lease of life as artificial reefs


















FOUR decommissioned frigates could be cut up for scrap or used as artificial reefs under plans drawn up by the Ministry of Defence. The Ministry of Defence’s Defence Equipment and Support agency (DE&S) is now looking at what to do with the Type 22 frigates which are rusting away in Portsmouth Harbour. HMS Cumberland, HMS Cornwall, HMS Chatham and HMS Campbeltown were all axed in the coalition government’s 2010 defence cuts. What a ridiculous headline `new lease of life` it means that they may get sunk.Why cant we give them to the Indian or Pakistan navy? Oh yeah don't be silly they both have a much more modern Navy and don't need our cast offs.I would rather have seen them updated and still used by the Royal Navy, but the MOD budget for the Navy is building two huge aircraft carriers, sounds good apart from the fact that as soon as the second one is built it will be mothballed, apparently cheaper to build it than not? You really couldn't make it up!
