SCRAP THREAT FOR BARROW WAR SHIP

Scrapping HMS Invincible is one of the options to be considered by Royal Navy chiefs, though the aircraft carrier could also be sold to a foreign navy if an acceptable bid arrives.
Invincible was launched by the Queen in Barrow in 1977 and played a pivotal and historic role in Britain’s Falklands War victory, operating, despite threats from deadly Exocet missiles, with another Barrow built aircraft carrier, HMS Hermes.
Five years ago she was put into a “low state of readiness” leaving her two sister carriers the Tyneside built HMS Illustrious and HMS Ark Royal still in service.
The Navy said when its was taken out of active service that a decision about its future would taken in September 2010.
Until then she remains on the Navy’s list of warships. One of those hoping Invincible will not be scrapped is Lorraine Robinson who loves the ship and would like to see it brought back to Barrow as a museum ship.
She set up and runs a popular internet website Bring Invincible Home.
Opponents of her plan have said it would cost too much money but she would like to see grants given to tow the ship “home”.
She said: “This is decision year for Invincible.
“They will decide what to do with her. They might keep it until the end of the year but they are wanting to make a decision.
“People would definitely like to see the ship come and stay here. They say the UK has not got an aircraft carrier as a museum ship.”
Mrs Robinson said she has written to the Conservative Party in case they win the next election asking them to support the ship as a museum, but says she is disappointed that regeneration agencies don’t seem interested in the idea.
A Barrow-born Falklands veteran with the internet name,
Rogue Sailor , said in a blog: “ As I was born in Barrow and like her I am a veteran of the Falklands War, I would like to help with ‘Bring HMS Invincible Home’ campaign website.

Well I agree with `Rogue Sailor` on this one, whoever he or she is?
