One reason that Barrow-in-Furness wont be turning blue in May?

AN ex-army chief advising the Tories on defence policy has said Britain may not need Trident nuclear missiles and their submarines in a few years. With Barrow shipyard’s long-term future resting on orders for a replacement fleet of Trident submarines General Sir Richard Dannatt’s comments have led to another row between Labour and Conservative contenders for the Barrow and Furness parliamentary seat in the coming general election. General Dannatt told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “None of the major parties seem to have an appetite for not continuing with the independent nuclear deterrent at the present moment. I think on balance, on a very narrow points decision, that is probably right – for now.” It might not be in five or 10 years’ time.”
He added on BBC Radio Five live: “The defence of the realm, I think, should stand above party politics and should stand above inter-service fighting, and even squabbling over jobs in marginal constituencies.” Labour candidate for Barrow and Furness, John Woodcock, said: “These sinister remarks by the general that David Cameron has recruited to lead his defence review expose the truth behind the Tories’ sinister plan to delay Trident orders in the shipyard by five years.
