Help for Heroes Rugby Challenge Match

This is not just a rugby match, this is a chance for 82,000 people to get into Twickenham and cheer on our blokes... Any sportsman or sportswoman can understand what it is like to be at the top of their game and then to get injured; just imagine what it must be like to have your leg blown off while going to rescue your mate. This is about fit young people who are volunteering to serve their country and whose lives are changed while doing so. These blokes, these men and women, are the real heroes.

Let’s fill Twickenham on 20th September and show them that we really care.’

'This Help for Heroes match is special. It is unique. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stand up and make a real statement to our troops, our wounded and those who look after them. We care about what you’re doing and what happens to you. Rugby cares. Every man and woman, boy and girl who knows about passion, friendship and commitment, cares.

Let’s fill Twickenham on 20th September and show them.'

Scott Gibbs
International Select XV Captain

Dear Everyone,

Last October, Emma and I, together with a small team of friends, decided to do something practical to help the wounded coming back from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The original idea was to raise £500,000 by doing a bike ride. Our offer of help was welcomed by General Sir Richard Dannatt who directed us to Headley Court, the Rehabilitation Centre, where they urgently need a new swimming pool and gym complex. Currently, they are ‘making do’ by taking the wounded to the Leatherhead public pool.

Our non political appeal for help was heard by thousands and a simple idea grew into a tidal wave of support. As a very small team we were unable to lay on many fund raising events ourselves so the ethos has been to ask everyone to ‘do their bit’, to lay on an event and send us the money. That simple approach and the very obvious need has caught the imagination of thousands of ordinary, decent people and I am delighted to say that with the help of Royalty, Celebrities, the Armed Forces and The Media, we have received over £8 million so far. The first £6 million is put aside for the pool complex, the plans are submitted and by next year, the wounded will have their own pool.

It does not stop there, we have helped provide a home from home for relatives at Selly Oak Hospital and have several other projects on the go to improve the lot of ‘our blokes’. We need millions and we need it urgently, this is not going away. Every day we read of another soldier being killed or wounded; we grieve for the dead but we need to look after the living.

Many of you reading this will have already contributed, so don’t worry, I am not trying to tap you further this time! I just need you to help like this.

The RFU has given us Twickenham Stadium on the 20th September this year. The Legends of rugby have agreed to play in a once in a life time match. We will see the great turn out in Help for Heroes shirts; Dallaglio, Johnson, Gibbs, Greenwood, Lomu, Phil de Glanville, Ieuan Evans and many more, as well as the stars from the three services and other top players. It will be a great day and, here is the point of this, if we can fill HQ, that is 82,000 seats, we can make £1Million for H4H and that will all go to the wounded.

How can you help?

Copy this and send it to everybody in your address book. Let us make this the greatest email chain letter this country has ever seen.

Go to our website, read all about the day and book your tickets now! helpforheroes.org.uk

We need sponsors to cover the ‘on costs’ of the match. The players are doing it for free, the stadium is free but we have to pay for staff, electricity, accommodation etc. The more sponsors, the more goes to the wounded. We need to sponsor the trophy, the medals and the teams of wounded and their carers who we want to be there to enjoy the day. Can you help or know someone who can?

We want people who have networks to use them to spread the word. We want to see coaches coming from clubs, schools, fire stations, regiments, businesses, hunts, shoots, hospitals.. You name it. We want people who have never been to a rugby match to come along for a wonderful day out, see some great rugby and raise a huge sum of money for the wounded.

We want you to spread the word, talk about this, organise a group, buy a wristband, be creative, have some fun and Help a Hero.

Please forward the attached PDF on but please do not reply! I get enough emails as it is! If you want to sponsor us then all the details you need are on the website.

Very many thanks.

Bryn & Emma Parry
